Quit Smoking | Using Hypnosis To Quit Smoking – Why It Doesn\’t Work!

You are desperate to kick the habit and you have heard that if you use hypnosis to quit smoking it is one of the best methods to help you, but do you know that hypnosis only works on certain people? I have my hypnotherapy clients carry out a simple test to see if hypnosis really is the best way for them to quit smoking, and you can do the test yourself. All you need is a pen and a piece of paper.
Write down 10 reasons why you enjoy smoking. Then write down 10 reasons why you want to stop smoking. Go and do that now and then come back when you have finished to read the rest of this article. Well, could you do it? Is one list much longer than the other? Discovering whichever list is longest and most easy to complete will give you a clue to whether hypnosis will work for you.
You see, hypnosis only works if you really want it to. It works deep inside your sub-conscious mind and your sub-conscious mind knows what you really want. If you are trying to use hypnosis to quit smoking because you feel you ought to or you are doing it to keep someone else happy, then your sub-conscious mind knows this and the hypnosis will not work.
Have a look at your lists again. On the ‘10 reasons I enjoy smoking’ list, did you find it easy to come up with your ten reasons? Did it remind you that you do in fact get some enjoyment from smoking? If the answer is yes, then you are not ready to quit. If you were a potential client of mine, I would send you away. It would not be right for me to take your money, knowing that you are not ready to stop.
Be really honest on the other list, the ‘10 reasons you want to stop’. Are there reasons like: my partner thinks I should quit? Or, I suppose it’s not really healthy for me? If so, you are still not ready. Until you can fill this list with positive and personal reasons to stop smoking, hypnosis will not work for you.
Hypnosis is one of the most powerful tools we have to make changes in our lives, but we cannot use it to force anyone to do something they really don’t want to. I used hypnosis to quit smoking back in 1994 and as a hypnotherapist I’ve gone on to help hundreds of other smokers kick the habit.
